Interesting Chapter Sakura and Rinne both started to tell the ghost that they were together in order to get him to pass on. It turned out not to be necessary, but they both were thinking that it was a lie. I liked the discussion of forms of address since his use of Sakura would indicate a relationship between which kun or use of there last name did not.

Kagome always referred IY as IY. Whereas once she was friends with KOuga it was Kouga-kun.

multiple plays on honorifics in that chapter...and I have been told the chapter is a play on something from Ramna 1/2...would like to see if I can find that to compare....

They used to have such good notes in the blog entries about the cultural nuances and jokes...they sure haven't been doing that lately. It'd been nice to see some comment on some of the stuff that takes place here.

Yes, I miss the "intern notes" the blog used to have, too.

They were so good. Rinne's such a commentary on contemporary Japanese culture that we'll never get it all...even the nuancing about the significance of honorifics is tricky for us.

I will have to look at that. I read Ranma three years ago and I do not remember anything like that. VIZ does tend to take all Japanese words and phrases out of the text which it produces its adaptation.

Might be more like a homage to something she did in Ramna...the note I got from someone else knew the reference; it's part of Ramna I haven't done yet.

I knew there wouldn't be a chapter last week, but I didn't realize I had missed the previous week's chapter. It's very interesting/frustrating how Takahashi is writing Sakura as so perceptive in some ways and so completely clueless in others. I think Takahashi finally gave us something to explain Sakura's obliviousness to his feelings for her. She definitely focused in on how happy Rinne looked while on the "date" with his client. And it bothered her that he did not look happy when the two of them were walking around together later. I'm not sure I buy his explanation of that being his "salesman" look--I was chalking it up to him being able to go out and not worry about the expense. However, I will say that he reminded me of his father with that look.

There was indeed a lot of play on the importance of honorifics this time. I've never seen anyone make it so obvious in a manga before--it was nice to see it spelled out like that. It's very interesting, too, and I think it it is telling of how conscious mangaka are becoming of their worldwide audience.
