I have a sick computer...

I think the hard drive's starting to crash or something...I've got it in safemode right now, doing some stuff, and I'm busy posting on Hubby's system....I suspect I'll put my laptop on the network and be using it for awhile, but I might be a bit scarce while I get things taken care of...at least it's nice to know I have alternatives...

Considering the title of this post, I thought you meant a virus! Our desktop is down AGAIN with one that somehow got through the servers and dodged the firewalls; can't surf the web without being redirected all over the 'net.

Luckily eFenik hasn't been affected... so far. *crosses fingers*

I'm pretty sure it's not a virus...all the scans I've run say its not...I've had a hd fail before, and this is acting like that...so all my real computing is going to be on the lappy for awhile

Nasty, nasty on your desktop.

But hd crashes, those suck. Now I have to hurry up and rescue my data before it goes all the way down, and see if I can get the installation files of all the software I've dled, and other key things rescued before it reaches the point of no return...bleh.

But I did manage to reread the Odyssey while waiting for some of this stuff to run...

Surface scans, looking for bad clusters, take forever....

But I think I've rescued my data. Gonna run it through everything but the kitchen sink to make sure there's not a worm or something in it, but that makes me feel better....If so, then next on the list is a new HD and a copy of Windows 7....

I'm still getting used to Windows 7; have had XP for a hundred years. It has some neat features, plus a few WTF ones, but overall it's pretty decent.

Yeah, I'm using it on this laptop...so much better than Vista by far...

hope you get everything fixed real fast. stuff like that has happened to me a couple times, i've learned to send my work to myself and archive everything that is small enough to download as an attachment or google doc in g-mail. at least you've got a backup.

Most of my writing's archived in those type of ways...it's the music, and the photographs and my old knitting stuff I'm most worried about, some of it's not on my most recent backups...redundancy is our friend...

rescued what counted, and later will swap out the hd...and had a good laptop available, so I am doing ok...was so scared it would crash completely before I could do that, but I lucked out. Thanks!
