Now in case you don't know it, the writer of the Twilight books is LDS, a Mormon.  And also in case you don't know it, the Salt Lake Tribune is the liberal paper of Salt Lake City, distancing itself as much as possible from the Deseret News, the paper owned by the LDS church.

They ran the following story comparing Bella and the values in Twilight to typical Mormon values.  I think they stretched it, to poke at the values of LDS folk possibly, but  anyway, you might find it interesting:

wow, I think they stretched it a lot.

This made me lol:

A unique LDS teaching is that marriages are “sealed” for eternity; spouses are referred to as eternal companions. Bella describes her relationship with Edward as “forever.”

What teenager doesn't think their relationship is going to be forever? Geez. Hell, even I think of my marriage to my husband as forever, because he's the only one I can ever see myself with..not for any religious reason. :P

There's an ex-Mormon gal here on LJ who is infamous for her book-by-book dissection of the LDS symbolism, teachings and lifestyle found in the Twilight series. She can turn a phrase like nobody's business and I found myself laughing out loud more than a few times (along with learning interesting tidbits of LDS mythos) when I read through her analysis.

One tends to draw from one's background, so it doesn't surprise me....but I still think the Salt Lake Trib ran the story to jab at the church establishment there...local politics and all that...(Used to live in the general area...even as a gentile watching from the outside, you pick up on some of the nuances...)
