Oneshot: One Winter Night Beside the Fire

IK.  Takes place January, 1562 in my timeline.  Was going to put it in First Tweak, but it got a little long.

One Winter Night Beside the Fire

The wind howled, whipping through the trees outside of their house and beating coldly on the shutters.   Even near the fire pit, the air was cold and biting.

Kagome sat on her mat beside the fire, wrapped up in a quilt, warming her hands on a cup of tea.  She stared at the pale green liquid for a bit, swirling it a little as she watched it, before raising it to her lips to drink it.  She looked up at her husband as she sipped.  He too was wrapped up in a quilt, because his fire rat clothes were hanging up to dry after being soaked through by the snow he had trudged home in to get to her.  His silver hair, still damp from the weather, was plastered a bit to his head and down his back, cascading over the quilt and  making his triangular ears even more prominent than usual.

“When the tree near the storehouse blew over, I got scared,” she said, resting her tea cup on her fingers.

“It was old.  Not surprised the wind got it,” InuYasha said.  “Wind’s pretty fierce out there.  It gets that way in the mountains sometimes.  I guess we’ll have to wait until morning to see if it did any damage.”  He finished his tea and scooted closer to Kagome.

She looked up at him.  “I almost went out looking for you then.”

He took her cup from her hands, and set it down, and then slipped his hands over both of hers. “I wasn’t anywhere near that old tree.”  He kissed her forehead.  “We’d both gotten wet and cold for nothing.”

Kagome leaned her head against his shoulder, but smiled a little smile.  “Then we would have just had to warm each other up.”

InuYasha opened his arms wide, throwing open his quilt.  “We can still do that, you know.”  He pulled her close, and wrapped them back up in the two covers.  “You worry too much, woman.”

“I know,” she said, and kissed him on the chin.

Together, they sat there, listening to the wind and watching the fire, until after awhile, as the wind died down to a whisper, they fell asleep, safe in each other’s arms.
