So Dark the Night
Ah, how I love you, sunrise,
when I stand in the dew and the breeze,
and breathe in the sweet scent of newness,
and hope seems a possible,
but the day ticks by relentlessly,
and that dawning hope turns into reality,
things accomplished, or never to be,
and night ever draws near,
So dark the night.
I light a single candle
and contemplate endings
the taste of dawn,
the smell of the earth,
and life without me.
