Poem - Winter Branches

Bare branches that stand
against a cold winter’s sky
reveal more than hide
as they reach many fingered
arms up to a gray heaven.

Stripped of all pretense,
the winter tree cannot hide
nor can his own heart --
echoing the emptiness,
he sits there in bare branches.

Love the vivid imagery and the focus on tree and its inhabitant. Is the "he" a bird, a spirit, something else?
