Poem: Snow Day in Autumn

not IK

Snow Day in Autumn

Wind in the branches,
bare in the late autumn day
decorated now
by wind-blown yellow and red,
a sad, borrowed finery.

Naked the branches
cold against a leaden sky
bend with winter’s kiss,
as white flakes hesitantly
dance on its breath, then grow bold.

I watch you dancing,
Yuki Onna, rehearsing
for dark days ahead,
wrapped in the late autumn wind
moving through the bare branches.

Tomorrow they say
the wind will grow calm and sun shine,
autumn’s short triumph,
but we know that autumn gives way,
and you will win the battle.
