True confessions of an IY fanfic writer

1.  I do not personally  find Sesshoumaru sexy.

2.  My favorite secondary character is Toutousai.

3.  Of the IY core group, I think I would enjoy spending time just to talk with Miroku the most.

4.  I do wish RT had developed the Inu connection with the afterworld a little better.  Sesshoumaru, Sesshmom, even Inupapa seem to have a connection to the hell regions (witness the Meidou connections, and even InuPapa's burial site, and the time Sessh brought the Unmother up that RT just never made clear.

5.  I don't believe Sessh is a ball of angst, as much as a serious, intense young man.

6.  I secretly (well maybe not so secretly) wish I had hair like Naraku, only red.

1. I think the people who find Sesshoumaru sexy are responding to his aloofness.
2. Toutousai is generally a hoot when he shows up, then after he leaves, you realize he's said or done something important that everybody overlooked at the time. I don't think he's really scared of Sesshoumaru.
3. For me it would be a toss-up between Miroku and Sango.
4. RT does leave the connection with the afterworld pretty ambiguous. Maybe all greater youkai have the potential to interact with the hell regions?
5. I don't think Sesshoumaru is angst-with-perfect-hair either. He's serious and ambitious and not given to wasting words, particularly on those he suspects Won't Get It.
6. I wish I had hair like Sesshmom, I'd even be happy with white.

1. Me neither! I can see how others might in a sort of objective way, but frankly any depiction of him as a sex symbol just sorta creeps me out...not sure why...

3. Me too! As much as I love Inuyasha, he's not really the chatty type. Miroku is clever and observant, and I'm sure he could carry on a very enjoyable conversation.

5. Agreed. I've always found him a bit boring, actually, and I don't like it when people put upon him some torrent of emotions. He'll never be my favorite character, but I respect what he is, and I think the idea that his seriousness is a facade for some kind of Inuyasha-carbon-copy personality (which, to me, is what most of the angstier versions of Sesshy feel like -- as if they really wanted to write Inuyasha, but in a "sexier" body) does him a disservice.

Oops! Sorry, meant to post that as a comment, not a reply... (*grin*)

Sesshmom does have great hair!

I think Toutousai knows how to handle everybody just right. Maybe I should write some more fic about him...hmmm....

1. I think there are some out there who find Sesshomaru's mystery sexy. He doesn't give a lot of himself away, especially in the beginning.

2. Toutousai is funny and he is really wise. I agree with the above poster, I don't think he's afraid of Sesshomaru.

3. I really would have to say Miroku is the one I'd love to talk with. There is so much more to him than we really see.

4. RT left a lot of things unexplained or really unclear. I have questions for her, too.

5. Sesshomaru has is not angsty. He is focused on what he wants to do and does not suffer fools lightly. I do like his determination.

6. I wouldn't mine having Sango's hair. I love the ponytail!

No, Sessh doesn't give a lot away. Makes me want to poke him when I do write him, since I tend to avoid interior monologue.

I want to poke him, too. As an expressive writer, whenever I use Sesshomaru in my stories, I have to remember to reign it all in. It can be frustrating at times!

LOL. I'm happy, pretty much, with how I characterize him now...I think I've shed most of the fanon view, and got him where I want him. At least he doesn't give me the evil eye when I write him any more...he used to be so demanding.
"You will write me into the next scene, Ningen," he would say.

"OK. So what do you want to do?" I would ask.

"That's your job to decide," he would reply and then stalk off, with a glare that said it had better be perfect.

Ever since I let Rin grow up and them pair off, he's been more content...funny how that works...even for mental projections of our characters.

1. When I first wandered into fandom, one of my biggest 'problems' was that I didn't find *Inuyasha* sexy. I just wanted to mother the poor boy. Multi-shipping and gen-ficcing ensued. ::amiable shrug::

3. Oh, yes. Definitely Miroku.

When I started watching InuYasha, it was because he was in a point of development that reminded me of my youngest stepson...childhood trauma and feeling like an outsider...then I got more into it....

I love this. I wanna snag it and do it too. Like fill-in-the-blanks meme. I agree with #3 and I love #6. As for #4, I just wish she had control over what the heck she was doing with the overarching plot half the time! And c'mon, we make #5 happen because else he's just boring and macho. ^_^

I'm glad you snagged it.

Aha! Character manipulation...but your Sessh is such a wicked delight....

All fanfic is character manipulation. And Sesshoumaru needs some serious manhandling, godmodding, and writerly wickedness. Daily. XD

1. Same here. I love the hair, and the Sesshoumaru we see early in the manga (maybe it's just me, but his art evolved a bit throughout the manga)... but I find him just a little too pretty to be sexy.

2. I have so much love for Totousai, but not many people can write him well. Kinda like Mushin.

3. Miroku! I could spend hours talking to him - best part is, I bet he'd talk back.

4. Wow - I never really thought of that before, actually... but you're right. That would be a really interesting path to follow... (and make for a neat Rin-ne minor crossover, too)

5. I think he's a teen that was forced to grow up too early with his father's death. Now he's forced to prove himself to people who want to make a name for themselves.

6. I want Sango's hair. It's a lot sleeker than mine. Then again, I also love my Kagome wig...

It's not his prettiness that turns me off...I think it's his perfectionist streak. I hate people who refuse to let the bumps and flaws sneak out...Teh Envy rises up. I wanna pour hot chocolate pudding on his hair and red in on his sleeves...LOL...(not really, but it would be interesting to see how he would react....)

I think all of your points about Sesshoumaru embody why I find most S/K fic absolutely maddening. I agree with you completely - I don't find him sexually attractive (he's pretty, I'll give you that :P), I don't think he's particularly angsty (that would require him to have emotion!), and I don't believe he's a psychopathic serial rapist (which seems oh-so-common in S/K lemons).

This has been bugging me for awhile, so thanks for clarifying, LOL!!

As to point #4 ~ maybe that's what makes him unique among his relatives? His humanity prevents him from having such a strong connection to the underworld, because it ties him back to the earth (or "heaven", if we're going by swords here) instead?

I love Totosai, not even gonna lie! I'm not sure which secondary character I like the most, though...they're all about equal in my eyes :)

I actually think I see Sessh with more emotion than you perhaps think he has...he'll never be very expressive, though. He starts out angry and full of himself, and slowly learns that the perfection he seeks isn't in being a lone wolf. We only get to see, really, the start of this in the manga...but if, as they say in the character profiles book, that he's the equivalent of a 19 year old, he's still pretty wet behind the ears.

I actually think I see Sessh with more emotion than you perhaps think he has..

*shrug* I write him as I see him, so perhaps I don't explain myself very well. I'm just so tired of seeing him being either emo/angsty or a sociopathic serial killer, as if its just one extreme or the other.

I carry many scars from S/K fandom. Its definitely not for the sane...

From what I hear, I believe you. Closest I get to that world is my S/R stories, and that's close enough.

Yeah, I don't see Canon Sessh as emo angsty, and definitely not a serial killer type, although the way he was introduced in the manga, I see where the fanon fixated. Most of the bad fanon characterizations are fixated on an exaggeration of some early things in the story line. Which is truly a shame.

I always wanted to see more of Kaede the Feminist. That's just me. Maybe a fanon trip.

Miroku seems pretty interesting. More interesting than Sesshomaru.

Miroku is very interesting.

I don't know if I could visualize any 16th century woman in Japan as feminist, but I do see Kaede as one of the last of the empowered Mikos...everywhere else they were fast becoming merely little helpers as the matrilinear rural society gave way to the Budo class demand for Confucian social organization...(There I go again, blending real history into InuYasha...slap my hand....)

When I decided I was going to do the canon thing, I had zillions of questions that lead me to get very heavy into the social history...there's a lot that people in Japan would take for granted as part of their knowledge, and that we just don't know without looking it up. Learned a lot, had fun doing it. Bought lots of books...but I like the excuse to do history research, so it was fun.

1. i lived/hung out with a bunch of guys (in the 70's) who looked/dressed like sesshoumaru (hairdresser- with a gay roommate)-- all i can see is the 'pretty boy' with major emotional constipation. emotions may be there, but he's too busy with the perfect 'i'm so badass' image. yes, he's young and needs to be that way to prove his strength/position-- but i really think his mother is the real ruler (if she rules anything)-- i believe inu-no-taisho was her consort. 'taisho' is more like a military 'general' (at least that's what i read into it).

2. I LOVE TOUTOUSAI! he's alot like my dad was. i love how he gets over on the brothers. he's very manipulative in a sneaky geriatric sort of way-- love watching his senile act.

3. yes, i agree. miroku is educated and has a very interesting philosophy on life that i believe he would be more than willing to discuss.

4. there are many things i wish RT would have rounded out and a few things that took entirely too much time in manga/anime. i would have really appreciated a more complete back story on inuyasha and his family-- their powers, relationships to one another, etc.

5. if real life is thrust upon one so young, it could either make a person anywhere from entirely too serious to a total screw up. at the beginning of the series, he seemed like he had a chip on his shoulder and that he had something to prove. in the end he proved what he had to, but the chip, albeit smaller, is still there.

Yep, if there's anything to be ruled, Mama does it, not Sessh. She at least has the magic castle. I don't really think of there being a real, earthbound Western Shiro, with all the typical Daimyo stuff that might go with it) that is their home base, although some forms of Dog Youkai are traditionally linked to mountain places (which is why I created the place where I moved Inu and family to - and there they don't think of the Inu Youkai people as daimyo, they think of them as Kami, or the servants of the Kami of the mountain).

Yep, Sessh is in several ways still wet behind the ears, a late adolescent pup, IMHO....
