Poem and Picture: Blue Sky, Dark Water

river

River, river running cold
there between the trees so bold,
cottonwood with arms of brown --
blue the sky and white the ground,
still you flow with eager pace
from that snow-capped mountain place
choked with ice but running free
with some unspoken destiny.

River, river running cold
there beneath the trees so bold,
a tale of sun and rain and stone,
of pine and willow and cold wind's moan,
of fish and bird and beaver too,
and snow and ice and sky so blue --
all these echo as you flow along.
Your waters murmur with the song
