Poem: Too Hot

Not IY

Too hot.
I sit in the shade and watch the garden.
A butterfly
yellow fluttering
floats above the beans,
then flits above the tomatoes,
and I wonder where it gets the energy.

Too hot.
There are things I should be doing.
A house finch lands on the fence
looks at the empty bird feeder
and looks at me
then flies away.

I look at the hoe
and then at my ice tea.
Too hot –
the ice tea wins.
