VIZ MEDIA’S NEWEST IMPRINT, SHONEN SUNDAY, WILL RELEASE THE FIRST MANGA TO EVER BE PUBLISHED SIMULTANEOUSLY IN JAPAN AND NORTH AMERICA

A New Imprint and Web Site Launch
Rumiko Takahashi’s Newest Series RIN-NE Gets Its First Volume

San Francisco, CA, July 8, 2009– VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry's most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced the launch of a brand new imprint, SHONEN SUNDAY. Featuring the works of some of the top shonen manga creators in the world today, the Shonen Sunday magazine in Japan provides the content for this imprint. The magazine recently celebrated its 50th anniversary since its first issue arrived on newsstands in March of 1959.

The first series to launch from the first volume under this new imprint will be RIN-NE by Rumiko Takahashi, the first manga novel ever to be published simultaneously in Japan and North America, which will arrive on store shelves on October 20, 2009.  Chapters of RIN-NE have been serialized online for free at www.TheRumicWorld.com on the same weekly schedule as it appeared in Japan’s Shonen Sunday magazine since May of this year. The Rumic World web site is the official North American destination for all Rumiko Takahashi-related news.

VIZ Media will be announcing new Shonen Sunday series for 2010 at its Manga and Anime panel at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International on Friday, July 24th from 3:00-4:30 in Room 32AB. Other VIZ Media series that will move under the Shonen Sunday banner include INUYASHA, KEKKAISHI, CASE CLOSED, HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER, and YAKITATE!! JAPAN. Going forward, DVD products from the select series will also feature the Shonen Sunday imprint.

The imprint’s web site (www.ShonenSunday.com) will be updated regularly with exclusive content such as previews, trailers, news, and interviews and will go live on July 22, 2009.

Maybe that's the big news on July 22. "We've expanded to North America!"

I was checking out the chatter on ch2, and they were talking there about it like it was almost certainly a done deal...I'm going to keep monitoring, although my googlese has gotten rusty....

OOH!! Awesome news!! I'm really happy Rin-ne will be out around my bday. Even though I've been reading it online, I still like having a book in my hands. ;p

*scrunchy face*

Since this magazine will re-launch in October, this is probably the 'big announcement' leaked last week. Damn. Since the final IY manga volumes are being released unflipped at around the same time, this is undoubtedly a case of cross-advertising to maintain interest in the brand. Gotta hand it to VIZ; they know how to market their products.

*goes off to pout*

It's possible. But the Shonen Sunday teaser is InuYasha specific, and the October thing is for Rinne.

Something else is up. Maybe the release of Black Tessaiga or even worse, the announcement of a live action production of InuYasha....
or the restart of the anime.

But it's people who post to the ch2 forum that are the ones spreading the talk about the anime. I'm back at my old stuff, reading googlese, hunting for clues...

If I hear anything definite before the announcement date, I'll spread the word.

BTW the October thing is for Rinne, and the teaser's for InuYasha...

Launching a North American site is a Big Deal; it means that VIZ is taking the NAm market seriously. My money's still on the 'Black Tetsusaiga' DVD offering as the big IY announcement, however, simply because it's been a year since it was shown in Japan and they probably think that us gaijin aren't aware of its existence.

EEEEEK! No, not a live-action IY! *throws purification salt and a couple of sutras for good measure*

I was discussing the anime extension option with my marketing maven BIL, and he pointed out that from an economic standpoint, it would make more sense for VIZ to continue the anime through the release of movies, as opposed to several more multi-episode seasons. They're more likely to make their money back in a timely manner through movie releases than the huge investment in production of hundreds of episodes that then have to be licensed in the overseas market for a manga storyline that is completed.

I'm just glad it's not going to be a long wait to see what's up their sleeve...but it's got to be something that'll appeal to the Japanese market, since the original teaser was in the Japanese edition of Shonen Sunday. Releasing Black Tessaiga is certainly one of those things.

I hear ya on that purification salt...It takes a master to take a work that is widely loved and visualized and turn it into live action, and there are only a few noteworthy people who have pulled it off, although I'd like to see how they'd do kaze no kizu live action, just so I could describe it in writing...LOL (I don't want to see what they'd do to the characters, mind you. I just want to see live action fx of the magic...that's a wish that won't get fulfilled...)

And yeah, bout time they started realizing what a big chunk of change there is to be made in NA...
