Drabble: Too Quiet

A little IK moment.  Takes place around September, 1557

Too Quiet

“You’re too quiet,” InuYasha said as he stirred the fire in the fire pit.  Something crackled and popped as he pushed at the embers, sending a small stream of sparks up.  The firelight glinted off of his silver hair, giving it a reddish glow even in the late afternoon light.

Kagome sat by the window, under the last of the daylight, working on the hem of a carry cloth.  She pulled the thread through a stitch, then looked up at him.   InuYasha was staring into the fire, the fire tongs in his right hand, but his right ear, always a give away to his current state, was twitching.

“What makes you say that?” she asked, not putting down her needlework.

“Ever since I came in, you’ve just sat there and sewed,” he said.

“Well, I’m trying to finish this,” she replied.  “I told Kaede I’d have it for her as soon as possible.”

“But you usually talk while you’re sewing.  Or sing, or something.”  He sighed and dropped the fire tongs back in their place.

“I’m just really trying to finish this,” she said.

Turning around, he looked at her again.  She was pulling the thread through another stitch.  He scooted across the room and sat down next to her.

“You’re mad at me, aren’t you?” he said.

Kagome looked up into her husband’s amber eyes.  They were looking at her with a nervous intensity.  His face, she decided,  had the look of an anxious puppy, uncertain, wanting to be reassured, although she would never tell him that out loud.

“What makes you think that?” she said, putting her sewing down.

“The way you’ve acted since I got back yesterday from the market with Miroku .  You’ve been busy with Kaede or running over to Sango’s. You’ve been too busy to talk to me.”

“Is that what you thought?”  She lifted a hand and brushed his cheek.  “ But InuYasha, I was helping Kaede with Chiya’s daughter.  She’s really sick.  And then I went to Sango’s because she fixed a stew for us for dinner while I was busy.  And today, I was really just trying to hurry up and get this done so we could spend some time together.”

He leaned into her touch.  “You’re not mad at me?”

“Of course not, “ she said, leaning forward, kissing him lightly on the cheek, running her fingers through his hair and up to the base of his ear.  “Why would I be mad at you?”

“I did forget to get that red silk thread you asked for,” he said, closing his eyes as she played with his ear.

“But you brought me something else back in red that is really more important,” she replied.

“Oh?” he said.  “I don’t remember anything else I brought back that was red, except maybe those dried berries for Kaede.”

Her face was very close to his.  “You, baka.”

Kagome’s lips brushed against his.  “Now let me finish this sewing and I’ll show you how much I appreciate that.”

Picking up the cloth, she went back to her work.
