Drabble: At the End of a Bad Day

Sequel to Ambush.  An IK moment that wouldn't leave me alone to do anything else.

At the End of a Bad Day

“I didn’t think he’d ever go to sleep,” Kagome said, leaning her head on InuYasha’s shoulder.

They were sitting next to the campfire, a good day’s journey from home.  Behind them, Atae snuggled into his father’s suikan, sleeping peacefully.  InuYasha, threw a stick on the fire and watched the sparks fly up.

“Keh,” the hanyou said.  “It’s not been an easy day for him.”

“Not been an easy day for me, either,” Kagome sighed.

“Keh,” he replied, wrapping an arm around her.  “That’s true.”

She snuggled closer to him and took his free hand in both of hers.   “I was so scared when you hit the ground,” she said.  “You were so still.  I felt like something broke in me.”

He wrapped his fingers around one of her hands, and brought it up to his face, pressing it against his cheek.  “It was strange,” he said.  “I hit the ground, and suddenly, I felt like I was floating.  I saw the youkai moving towards the cave, and I heard you say not to leave you . . . and then my youki surged.”  He kissed her hand, then pulled her into his lap.  “Forgive me,” he whispered, brushing his lips lightly across her forehead.

“Forgive you for what?” she said, pulling back, searching his eyes.

“For letting you get into danger.  For scaring you like that.  For scaring Atae.”  He ran the back of  his fingers across her cheek.  “I saw your fear when Atae ran up to me.”

She kissed his chin, wrapped her arms around his neck.  “There’s nothing to forgive, InuYasha.  You didn’t die.  You saved us.”

His mouth found hers in a soft gentle kiss, tender, lingering.  “You and Atae, you give me a reason to live,” he said.  “Get some rest, Koibito.  We’ve got a long day tomorrow.”

“As long as it’s not a day like today, it’ll be a good one,” she said.

She got up, and taking him by the hand led him to their bedroll, where she lay next to her son.  Spooning up next to her, he wrapped his arm around the two of them, and stared into the night, ready to move heaven and earth to keep them safe.
