Deer tracks in the snow –
a larger footprint follows,
broad-pawed, and with claws.
He remembers this place
as they walk through the woods,
a place hidden in the deep forest,
dark with old, tall trees and rock walls,
well off the main track,
where, once upon a time,
he would come and hide
far from the prying eyes that chased him away.
He runs his hand along the trunk
of a tree he would never forget –
he had scrambled up there as a boy,
exhausted and frightened,
hiding himself in its branches one sleepless night
watching while those who pursued him
gave up and went away.
For a moment, he remembers
the taste of his terror,
how his arms trembled with fatigue,
how his heart pounded in his ears,
and as the wave of emotion the memory brings up
dark with the shadow of despair
washes over him,
a soft hand touches him
bringing him back.
“I lost you there for a moment,” she says with a smile.
“Almost,” he replies,
as he gives her a hug
and tousles the silver hair of the child strapped to her back,
their child who has never known fear,
who looks up at him with happy amber eyes,
and with a deep breath and a smile,
he steps out of the past,
and walks happy and determined
into his future.
Oh, I had to take a sudafed yesterday afternoon. I thought I maybe had taken it early enough so I could sleep. No such luck. Wild dreams, including one about fishing with one person who was a doctor or a medical tech, who made a weird fish stew....and waking up maybe every hour or so to check the time. Gah. Today I'll use nose spray instead.
Beyond being somewhat sleep deprived, I'm trying to wake up enough cause I want to go to the shooting range with my hubby and a friend of ours, and shoot my flintlock rifle. Been a while since I shot Long Needle. She's a 54 caliber early Virginia style longrifle, with an octagon to round barrel with a curly maple stock, 36 inch barrel and she's a fun piece to shoot. She only kicks if I use too heavy a powder charge.
I think I'll take my camera, too, and see if I can get some pics of the shooting practice in action.
It feels like spring here. Night temps are still freezing, but its getting into the mid 40s during the day, and sunny. I suspect, though, it's just the inverse of Indian Summer....a little hint of spring before we get hit with some more winter weather....
No shooting today. Range is closed while it's having some work done. Maybe tomorrow, if the snow that's predicted doesn't come in or isn't too bad...
Probably for the best. I really, really need a nap! LOL. But I sure miss the smell of black powder burning....
